Sentara Martha Jefferson Magnet Program Redesignation

Excitement filled the air when Sentara Martha Jefferson learned they had once again achieved Magnet Recognition Program® designation from the American Nurse Credentialing Center. Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital received official announcement of their re-designation on July 7, 2016.

The designation, granted to about 8 percent of U.S. hospitals, culminates a multi-year journey toward recognition for excellence in patient care, innovation in nursing practice and a supportive work environment for nurses.

“The Magnet journey builds teamwork, inspires nurses to become leaders, promotes research and evidence based practice, and challenges every nurse in the organization to find ways to make a difference in the lives of their patients,” noted Nancy Maloy, MSN, RN, NE-BC, vice president nurse executive at Sentara Martha Jefferson.

Hospitals applying for Magnet recognition first file several hundred pages of reports documenting that they are already meeting 49 quality measures ranging from falls with injuries to hospital-acquired infections and skin breakdown. If they meet those criteria, a three-day site visit validates the documentation while nursing team members are interviewed for their clinical knowledge and knowledge of the process. Finally, the Commission on Magnet reviews the findings and determines the final outcome of designation as a Magnet hospital.

“Maintaining Magnet recognition for the third time is an honor that reaffirms the hard work and dedication of our entire staff. I am so proud of this team and their continued commitment to provide high quality care to our community,” said Lesley Cook, MSN, RN, NE-BC, regional director of nursing excellence at Sentara Martha Jefferson and Magnet program director.

Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital originally received magnet designation in 2006 and has successfully completed recertification of their status three times. Several other Sentara hospitals in Norfolk, Harrisonburg and Williamsburg have also achieved Magnet® designation.
