Recently, clinical staff and executive leaders at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital gathered with great excitement and anticipation as the hospital received official confirmation of its Magnet Recognition Program® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.  The designation, granted to about 7 percent of U.S. hospitals, culminates a multi-year journey toward recognition for excellence in patient care, innovation in nursing practice and a supportive work environment for nurses.

“Receiving the Magnet Recognition Program® designation is an enormous accomplishment and acknowledgement of our dedicated team’s tremendous work, “said Dr. Thomas Thames, president of Sentara Princess Anne Hospital.  “The recognition is a direct result of our commitment to providing the absolute best care in the safest environment possible for our patients, and our clinical staff are a driving force in this effort.”

ANCC’s Magnet is the most distinguished award a hospital can receive for nursing care. Specifically, the hospital was evaluated based on the following components:

  • Transformational Leadership: Managers, directors and the chief nurse executive have influence outside the sphere of nursing and use their influence to ensure the voice of the clinical nurse is heard throughout the organization
  • Structural Empowerment: The structure of the organization ensures the voice of clinical staff is heard throughout the organization
  • Exemplary Professional Practice: Nurses constantly work to improve patient care and their nursing practice
  • New Knowledge: Nurses use evidence-based practice to improve care, as well as perform research that contributes to the nursing body of knowledge

“Our goal is to improve health every day and our clinical staff are the ones on the front lines helping us achieve that goal and we are so proud of the work they do,” said Joani Brough, vice president and nurse executive at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital.  “We are thrilled to join our Sentara sister hospitals with this designation and to continue to provide the highest quality of care for our patients.”

Sentara Princess Anne Hospital is the sixth Sentara hospital to receive Magnet recognition. Sentara Leigh Hospital was recognized in 2015 and Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center and Sentara RMH Medical Center were recognized in 2014.  Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville received its in 2006 and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital received its in 2008.  Other Sentara hospitals are also on the journey to Magnet Excellence®.
