For serious heart problems, your doctor may determine that the best treatment option is heart surgery. Every year, half a million Americans undergo heart surgery for a variety of heart conditions, including coronary artery disease.
The implementation of Sentara RMH's Cardiothoracic Surgery program has expanded the scope of coronary procedure options to include coronary artery bypass, heart valve replacement, and aortic surgery. Your cardiologist, in consultation with our cardiothoracic surgeons, will determine if you are a candidate for cardiac surgery based on:
- Your specific anatomy.
- The location and severity of blockages.
- The need for valve repair or replacement based on degree of malfunction.
- The need for aneurysm or heart rhythm surgery
The cardiothoracic team also provides all non-heart-related surgeries within the thoracic (chest) cavity. This includes surgery performed on the lungs, diaphragm and chest wall.
Sentara RMH Cardiothoracic Surgery is an award-winning program, receiving a three-star (highest) rating for three consecutive years in Aortic Valve Replacement by the Society for Thoracic Surgeons (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2015).
