When a patient has sustained a stroke or any other life-altering neurological injury or disorder, a team approach is recommended in order to return the patient to his or her maximum level of function. The team consists of a physical therapist, occupational therapist and a speech therapist who can coordinate their areas of expertise in order to address the patient’s specific functional goals. Family members are encouraged to participate in the therapy sessions to reinforce and incorporate therapy techniques at home.
Sentara RMH therapists treat patients with neurological problems that include stroke, MS and Parkinson's disease. Specifically designed exercises, cardiovascular training, balance and gait training can help limit impairments that lead to functional limitations and disability. Sentara RMH physical and occupational therapists also provide the necessary education for patients and their families to further assist in neurologically related disease management.
