It’s not just hysterectomies that are improved by the da Vinci technology, other gynecologic surgeries treating endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids or infertility due to infection can gain from this approach.

“These procedures benefit from the delicate, wristed instruments and the ability to see very clearly with 3-D vision. I can bring the camera as close as I want,” said Dr. Lisbet Hanson, a gynecologic surgeon and Medical Director of the Sentara Women’s Health Center at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

“This precision minimizes the trauma to the ovary and Fallopian tubes, and optimizes the chances for future fertility. We can preserve the parts of the ovaries that aren’t damaged or the uterus by doing it robotically,” she said.

Hanson compared it to today’s phones, in terms of basic versus sophisticated function.

“Of course, you can still use the old rotary phone and do what you need to do, make a call. But with better technology, like the da Vinci, you can do so much more. It’s more precise and efficient,” she said.

This innovative tool helps surgeons and offers enhanced outcomes for patients.

“This is the forefront of how technology aids how health care is delivered, and it’s a positive step, a big plus. Sentara is leading the way on this,” said Hanson.

Dr. Hanson is the first surgeon in the area to achieve a certification in robotic surgery from the Surgical Review Corporation. This designates Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery and Minimally-Invasive Gynecology, which signifies consistently delivering the safest, highest-quality care.

“Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital’s priority is the health and well-being of our patients. Innovations like robotic surgery are delivering better results with less complications and our team is proud to achieve this accreditation,” said Bernie Boone, president of Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Women whose physicians have recommended surgery now have more options, with more confidence that the most innovative tools and surgeons are available.
