A new doctor and a new knee
When Karen Coughlin of South Boston began having trouble walking and enjoying her garden, she knew it was time to pursue a knee replacement.
“The pain just got so bad. It got to the point where I was tired of hurting, tired of taking medication to control the pain, and just tired of dealing with it,” says Karen. “There had to be a better way.”
She knew she wanted to have her knee replaced by Mesfin Shibeshi, D.O., because of his care and concern, even when she wasn’t the patient.
“I recently had a shoulder replacement, and I came along with my husband who had an appointment with Dr. Shibeshi shortly after. He asked me how my shoulder was doing,” says Karen. “That kind of consideration for someone who wasn’t his patient is what made me want to come to him for my knee replacement.”
The right decision
Karen had a successful total knee replacement with Dr. Shibeshi and completed the Sentara OrthoJoint Center program.
“I am able to get out and walk and work in my yard. My stamina is through the roof,” says Karen. “I have even come out of retirement and am now working again. There is just a huge difference in the way that I feel each day.
