Student Volunteers

Volunteering is a great way for students to explore potential career paths and gain exposure to the healthcare work environment. Assignments are made based on hospital availability and need. Student volunteers are critical because they provide extra personal attention to support Sentara Martha Jefferson’s “The Caring Tradition and the culture of 'Always'." This additional support allows our regular staff to focus on the clinical aspect of a patient’s care. Once the volunteer assignment is made and the volunteer makes the commitment to follow a set schedule, he/she is expected to adhere to that schedule.

Our Student Volunteer Program has the following program requirements:

  • Students must be 16 years old or older
  • Minimum hourly requirement of 75 hours per program period
  • Competitive program with limited number of students accepted into the program
  • Attendance requirements (absent more than 3 times with no show more than twice will result in termination of volunteer assignment)
  • Attend an interview, complete all volunteer education, Health assessment overview**, Flu vaccination and attend volunteer orientation
  • Application link

**Student volunteer’s health assessment overview will be done by employee health and any updates on required immunizations are the student’s responsibility through their PCP.
