The School of Medical Laboratory Science offers training as a medical laboratory scientist and was started in 1968. The school offers the opportunity to enter a challenging and highly technical career in the health care industry. Graduates may be employed by hospitals, private or government laboratories, research facilities, medical supply companies, private physician offices and clinics. Some of our graduates continue to pursue an education in medicine and become physicians.
Sentara RMH Medical Center was founded in 1912 and is located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The hospital is a not-for-profit institution that is fully accredited by DNV and is a community-based regional healthcare facility licensed for 266 beds. The School of Medical Laboratory Science admits up to twelve students in January and June. The program includes six months of lecture and student labs in Harrisonburg, VA., followed by six months of rotation through all departments in the clinical laboratory. Clinical rotation sites include Sentara RMH Medical Center, Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital, Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.

Outcome Measures
With regard to outcome measures, the Sentara RMH School of Medical Laboratory Science has had a 100% pass rate on the ASCP Board of Certification exam for the last 20 years. Also, the three year average graduation rate percentage is 100%, and the three year average placement rate percentage is 100%.

It is the mission of the Sentara RMH School of Medical Laboratory Science to graduate beginning Medical Laboratory Scientists with the skills, knowledge, motivation and insight to excel in the practice of laboratory medicine and to pass national certification examinations. These graduates will be motivated to continue their education and to become our future educators, leaders, innovators and managers in the laboratory.
