Please find the following items below for helpful information about international students' application process to Sentara School of Clinical Pastoral Education.

  • Application for CPE

    Both resident and non-resident aliens should complete all the steps in the application process required of all applicants in addition to following the application requirements outlined below. The application and all accompanying documents must be in English and/or be translated into English.

  • Resident Aliens

    Upon application, resident aliens must provide a copy of their immigration registration card and any other relevant documents such as work permits, green card, etc. The application deadline for resident aliens is ordinarily at least one month prior to the published application deadline.

  • Non-Resident Aliens Application Deadline

    The application deadline for non-resident aliens is ordinarily nine months prior to the start of the program for which the applicant is applying.

  • Non-Resident Alien Visa Application

    Non-resident aliens will ordinarily apply for the J-1 Visa after they have been accepted into a CPE program. International students should make application at the center of their choice. Once accepted, the student should contact the ACPE national office (email: ) to apply for a visa. The visa process can take from six to nine months to complete. The visa must be obtained before you can begin CPE. Note: If a non-resident alien currently has a multiple entry visa or some other current U. S. entry or immigration document, a copy should be provided at the time of application.

  • Non-Resident Alien Financial Statement

    Non-resident aliens must submit in writing a financial statement indicating their means of support. This statement should include the amount of income the student will receive while attending school, the source of the income and the manner in which residency and medical expenses will be met. The statement should address the availability of income for returning to the home country at the end of the CPE program as well as the availability of income for an emergency trip home, should the need arise.

  • TOEFL Examination

    TOEFL examination is required of all persons who speak English as a second language. This includes all international candidates who are nonnative speakers of English.

    This also includes persons from countries in which English is one of the official languages but not necessarily the first language of the majority of the population or the language of instruction at all levels of schooling -- such as in British Commonwealth countries and US territories and possessions; persons from countries where English is not the native language even though there may be schools or universities in which English is the language of instruction.

    These persons will be required to demonstrate their ability to speak and comprehend English by obtaining a score of 213 for computer based testing or a score of 550 for paper based testing of the "Test of English as a Foreign Language. The TOEFL examination is administered worldwide. For updated information, call the Candidate Services Call Center at 1-800-GOTOEFL (1-800-468-6335). Information may also be obtained directly from TOEFL Education Testing Service via the Internet at

    The TOEFL exam can be waived, upon written request and at the discretion of this School, for persons who meet both the following criteria:

    Have lived in the US for a minimum of 24 months and have successfully completed at an accredited college or university in the United States the equivalent of two years of full-time college or graduate work.

    The Admissions Committee reserves the right to review applicants with extenuating circumstances on an individual basis.

  • Education Taken Outside the United States

    Applicants who have attended foreign universities/colleges may have their course work considered for school prerequisites. In order to have these courses considered, applicants must apply for a transcript evaluation. See list for acceptable agencies.

    The transcript evaluation must show the following:

    • U.S. degree equivalent U.S. semester hour equivalent for each course US grade equivalence for each course
    • Calculated grade point average (if available)

    The applicant should note that:

    • The transcript evaluation neither guarantees program acceptance nor eligibility for licensure/certification exams upon completion of the program.
    • The grade point average on the transcript evaluation must be a 2.0 (C) or better in each course in order to be considered for admission.
  • Clinical Pastoral Education Taken Outside the United States

    Students who have taken Clinical Pastoral Education outside the United States should provide not only a copy of the supervisors evaluation of their CPE but also provide contact information for the Supervisor and/or CPE Center. The contact information should include name, address, telephone number, and email address of the Supervisor and/or CPE Center. 

  • Admission Pre-Requisites

    • A master's degree whose length is equivalent to 72 semester hours (US).
    • A minimum of one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education whose standards are similar to those of the Association for Clinical Education.
  • Interview

    An in-person interview is required for all applicants currently living in the United States. In working out alternative interview procedures (to an in-person interview), a major factor is our ability to confirm that the identity of the interviewee is the same as the applicant.
