Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Care
More than 50 percent of nursing facility residents in the United States have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, a similar dementia or other memory-related issues. To insure that proper, compassionate and effective care is provided to these individuals, every employee of Sentara Woodview has received specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care training covering:
- Understanding dementia
- Normal vs. abnormal aging
- Communication techniques
- Bathing and dressing techniques
- Behavior management
- Eating and feeding assistance
- And much more
Employees are also required to participate in continuing education programs to keep their skills and knowledge up to date.
Person-centered and Resident-directed Care
Our goal is to enrich the lives of our residents and their families by providing compassionate resident-directed and person-centered care.
Our interdisciplinary care plan team creates an individualized plan of care for each resident focusing on strengths, preferences, his or her life story, interests and abilities. We encourage residents and their families to participate in the design of this plan.
A comprehensive program of spiritual, social, educational and physical activities is available for all residents, no matter what their level of cognitive function. Our activity van, equipped with lockdowns for wheelchairs, is available to for outings into the community.
