Sentara Therapy Center - Cancer Rehab

Sentara Therapy Center Cancer Rehab focuses on the unique physical needs of cancer survivors, from newly diagnosed to those who have long ago completed treatment. Treatments are provided by physical therapists with specialized training in cancer rehab and are lymphedema certified. Our goal is to work collaboratively with the survivor and the physician to create an individualized treatment plan to improve overall quality of life and day-to-day function.

Problems that may be addressed include:

• Balance issues
• Peripheral neuropathy (numbness/tingling in feet or hands)
• Fatigue
• Joint stiffness or pain
• Lymphedema (swelling) of the arms, legs, or face
• Muscle weakness
• Postural changes
• Scar and soft tissue tightness
• Fine motor issues (use of fingers and hands)
• Activities of daily living (bathing, dressing)
• Cognition/memory

Services and treatments

• Fall-prevention therapy 
• Education for lymphedema prevention and energy conservation
• Management of cording (Axillary Web Syndrome)
• Massage therapy 
• Pre- and post-operative assessment of function
• Scar management
• Treatment for cancer-related fatigue and weakness
• Treatment for cancer-related changes in hand dexterity
• Treatment for cancer-related functional changes (dressing, bathing, etc.)
• Cognitive therapy
• Treatment for post-operative swelling 
• Lymphedema therapy
