At Sentara, we know that one out of four adults age 65 or older falls every year, sometimes causing serious injury. Prior to a fall, you may experience one of the following conditions related to dizziness and balance that Sentara specialists can often successfully diagnosis and treat:
Balance disorders: You feel as though you're dizzy or going to fall down. The feeling is caused by impairment in one or more regions of your central or peripheral nervous system or by musculoskeletal/orthopedic issues.
Gait dysfunction(abnormal walking pattern): You have difficulty walking and risk losing your balance.
Lightheadedness/presyncope: This feeling of floating or dizziness is from a lack of whole brain blood flow from cardiac conditions, autonomic conditions, or dehydration.
Vertigo: You have a false sense that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving. This is caused by vestibular dysfunction.
