Sentara CarePlex Hospital receives Magnet designation
Excited voices could be heard echoing the halls at Sentara CarePlex Hospital as it received confirmation of its Magnet Recognition Program® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The designation, granted to about 8 percent of U.S. hospitals, culminates a multi-year journey toward recognition for excellence in patient care, innovation in nursing practice and a supportive work environment for nurses.
“Achieving Magnet designation is an enormous and well-deserved recognition for our nursing team, as well as our whole team, and I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said Debra Flores, President at Sentara CarePlex Hospital. “We are committed to improving health every day and our nurses are essential to making that happen for our community.”
Hospitals applying for Magnet recognition first file several hundred pages of reports documenting that they are already meeting 88 quality measures ranging from falls with injuries to healthcare-associated infections and skin breakdown. If the hospitals meet those criteria, a multi-day site visit validates the documentation while nursing team members are interviewed for their clinical expertise and knowledge of the process. Finally, a commission reviews the findings and votes on designating the applicant as a Magnet hospital.
“Magnet designation is the highest distinction our nursing team could earn and it truly underscores the quality of care we provide,” said Mark Beck, Chief Nurse Executive at Sentara CarePlex Hospital. “I see the tremendous work our team does every day and know they are absolutely deserving of the award. This means a lot to our whole team but it also says a lot to those candidates who are interested in future jobs at Sentara CarePlex Hospital.”
Sentara CarePlex Hospital is the seventh Sentara hospital to receive Magnet recognition. Sentara Princess Anne Hospital earned the recognition in 2016. Sentara Leigh Hospital achieved designation in 2015. Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center and Sentara RMH Medical Center were recognized in 2014. Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville received their initial designation in 2006 and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital received theirs in 2008. Other Sentara hospitals are also on the journey to Magnet Excellence®.
Sentara CarePlex Hospital is a 224-bed hospital that offers advanced surgical programs, emergency cardiac intervention and fellowship-trained physicians. Additionally, it is a Certified Primary Stroke Center and is home to the Orthopaedic Hospital at Sentara CarePlex Hospital, the area’s first dedicated orthopedic hospital.
