The Surgery Process
At Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, our goal is to relieve your pain, restore your independence and get you back to your hobbies, work and other daily activities.
We believe that YOU play a key role in your successful recovery. We involve you in each step of the program – from preoperative education sessions to postoperative exercises – to provide you with greater comfort throughout the process and speed your recovery.
The Steps to Recovery
- Step 1: Find a doctor if surgery is recommended, your surgeon’s office will schedule your surgery.
- Step 2: Attend a Preoperative Total Joint Replacement Education class. At class, you’ll meet your Orthopedic Nurse Navigator, rehab and clinical care coordinators. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, review the preoperative preparation activities and more. You will also receive the Sentara OrthoJoint Center Guidebook with information on preoperative preparations, what to expect each day you are at the hospital and tips for continued recovery at home. We encourage you to bring a family member or friend who will serve as your “coach” throughout the process.
- Step 3: Arrive early for your surgery and maintain open communication with your care team. Be sure to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have. After surgery, you will begin physical therapy and, if needed, occupational therapy. Discharge planning will begin as early as postoperative day one with a goal to have you back home on day two or three. If additional care is needed, those arrangements will be discussed and coordinated with you.
- Step 4: You’ll be given a plan for exercises to complete at home to help with a successful recovery. All patients will also receive an invitation to a reunion luncheon a few months after their surgery.
