Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is home to the only Level 4 Accredited Epilepsy Center in Hampton Roads. Our expertise spans every aspect of epilepsy care from diagnosis to evaluation to treatment. We treat hundreds of people every year and provide deep experience in all forms of epilepsy. We also offer personalized recommendations for every step of your care journey.

    Highlights of our program include:

Expertise: At Sentara, you receive care from epileptologists and neurologists with additional training (fellowships) in treating epilepsy. In addition, as we advance the field through research, we offer access to new treatments that are only available through clinical trials.

Team approach: For seizures that fail to respond to medications, you receive care based on the recommendations of multiple experts

Evaluation: We help you get the best care right from the start with a detailed evaluation. Our experts go beyond confirming an epilepsy diagnosis. We determine the type of epilepsy you have and pinpoint the area of the brain where the seizures start. This information helps us successfully treat some of the most complex forms of epilepsy. We also offer specialized inpatient monitoring in our 6-bed unit, which allows for dedicated monitoring by EEG technicians, registered nurses, and our epilepsy physician assistant. While the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit is located at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, advanced epilepsy care and neurodiagnostic testing is available throughout Sentara's network of hospitals and clinics.

A broad range of treatments: We offer the latest seizure medications, including newly approved treatments. If medications are not successful, we may recommend diet therapy or surgery. Our deep experience helps us find the best combination of treatments for you.
