Arriving for Your Delivery - What to Expect
Going into labor is both an exciting and emotional experience. Our goal is to ensure your comfort and safety during all phases of childbirth. Being prepared can help lessen the stress of going into labor. By the beginning of your third trimester, we recommend you take a tour of our maternity suite and pre-register for admission. You may register for tours at https://www.sentara.com/hampton-roads-virginia/medicalservices/services/maternity/maternity-tours.aspx or by calling 1-800-SENTARA (736-8272).
When you arrive at the hospital, park on the 2nd floor of the parking garage, following signs for Maternity. The Family Maternity Center is located at the rear of the hospital on the 2nd floor. Follow signs to Family Maternity Center and look for the Check-in window. Once you have arrived, you will register with the front desk team and then be shown to a room for evaluation.
The Family Maternity Center is a secured department. All visitors need to present a photo ID and be prepared to have a picture taken for completion of a visitor pass, which must be worn while in the department.
Once you are admitted, you will be taken to a labor and delivery room. If delivering vaginally, you will deliver your baby in this room. There is plenty of space for you to move around the room, including a spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower to ease your labor pains, a birthing ball for comfort, and a labor bed for rest and delivery. There is ample space for your support team to stay present at your bedside, but we do require you to choose no more than three people to be present at your birth. When your baby is born, we encourage the healthy baby to remain skin to skin with the mother for the first hour of life to ease the newborn's transition. This is an ideal time for you to bond with your new baby, begin breastfeeding, and invite visitors when the new parents are ready.
Approximately two hours after your delivery, you will move to a private postpartum room. The healthy newborn may stay with you in the room. We do have a newborn nursery in the event the baby needs ongoing observation or your medical condition warrants additional monitoring.
If you have a scheduled c-section, you will move to multiple rooms throughout your stay. You will begin in a pre-op room, then go into the operating room for delivery. Once surgery is complete, you will be moved into the recovery room for a minimum of two hours. Visitation is limited during this time as our focus is on family bonding and your surgical recovery. Next, you will move to a postpartum room to continue recovery and will stay there for the rest of your time in the hospital. Once settled into this room, visitors are welcome at your discretion, with only one adult support person staying overnight.
So you can plan accordingly, our expected length of stay for uncomplicated vaginal delivery mothers is 24-36 hours. Following a c-section delivery, the expected hospital stay is 48-54 hours. The care team will also let you know when to schedule your follow-up appointments in the days or weeks ahead.
Transition to Home
Before you leave, a women's health administrative associate will visit you to complete your baby's birth registration. After you complete and sign the forms, the hospital will file the official record of your child's birth with the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Vital Records. Instructions will be provided for you to obtain a birth certificate. We will also submit paperwork to automatically apply for your newborn's Social Security number, which you will receive at the mailing address on file.
Your Obstetrician, Pediatrician, and the Nurses will provide you with instructions to prepare you for the transition to home. We have a variety of educational videos to show throughout your stay to help you with this journey. Many resources will be available to you as a reminder of these instructions in the days ahead, including books on maternal and newborn care, safe sleep practices, and newborn feeding.
For a safe first ride, please remember to have your baby's car seat base already installed at the time of discharge. Your support person should be parked on the 2nd floor of the garage for a smooth transition.
Thank you for your interest in Sentara Princess Anne Hospital's Family Maternity Center. We look forward to caring for you and your family.
