Program purpose
PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Rotations
There will be seven required rotations, five required longitudinal experiences, and three elective rotations during the twelve-month residency program.
Staffing
After orientation is complete, residents will staff:
- Every 4th weekend and
- 2 evening weekday shifts every 4 weeks.
Additionally, residents will staff for 2 weeks in December while not on a rotation and will work one of the major holidays (Christmas or New Year's). Staffing during this time frame may include any shift on the pharmacist schedule.
Teaching and learning certificate
All residents will complete a Teaching and Learning Certificate program, which includes co-precepting at least one APPE student on rotation as well as various small group teaching experiences.
Conferences and presentations
All residents are required to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Vizient December meeting, where they will present MUE posters. In the spring, all residents attend the Research in Education and Practice Symposium (REPS) hosted by the University of North Carolina to share their final research project.
In addition, residents will deliver several formal presentations locally to Sentara pharmacy staff throughout the year including (2) 30-minute patient case presentations, (2) 15-minute journal clubs, (1) 50-minute ACPE-accredited continuing education lecture, and (1) 15-minute research project presentation.

Qualifications
