Family-Friendly Rooms and Accommodations
Our pediatric rooms were designed with your child in mind. Each room is private and spacious and can accommodate sleeping arrangements for parents and children. Each room has individual temperature monitoring to make your child's stay as comfortable as possible.
Safety and Security
Your child's safety and security during their stay with us is a top priority. The pediatric unit is locked at all times, and all nurses wear a hospital ID badge with a visible name and photo. Pediatric patients 12 and under will receive a security bracelet. A doorbell is located at the entrance of the pediatric unit to allow for secure access. You will have the option to provide a password to share with family and friends who have permission to visit your child.
Sentara RMH Medical Center Pediatric Hospitalists
At Sentara RMH Medical Center, we believe that we should be partners with you – working together to best meet your child's needs. Our pediatric hospitalists are a group of physicians who provide around-the-clock care to patients admitted to the hospital. A pediatric hospitalist is a pediatrician who cares for children from newborn to age 17 who have been admitted to the hospital.
Traditionally, a child's primary care physician would split their time traveling back and forth between their clinic and the hospital. This could be challenging and time-consuming for the physician and present difficulties in coordinating care with nursing staff. But with pediatric hospitalists, the physician only has responsibilities inside the hospital, so even though the patient care is short-term, the physician is readily available at the bedside 24-hours a day.
If an emergency or a change in a child's condition occurs, the pediatric hospitalist can react quickly and keep the family informed. This structure means your child's care is coordinated by a physician who specializes in hospital care and allows you more access to the physician caring for your child when they are hospitalized.
Our pediatric hospitalists will:
- Supervise and coordinate all areas of your child's care during his or her stay.
- Provide an on-call physician 24/7. And respond quickly to any changes in your child's condition.
- Communicate with your child's primary care provider so they know what's happening while your child is in the hospital. If your child does not have a primary care provider, let us know immediately. Our team will help you find a doctor.
Pediatric Discharge Planning
When your child is ready to be discharged from Sentara RMH, our pediatric hospitalist team will coordinate follow-up care with the primary care physician and any outpatient tests and procedures needed.
We will provide you with a printed discharge instruction packet and any prescriptions your child will need while at home. Please take the instruction packet with you to any follow-up appointments.
