History

The SNGH PGY1 pharmacy residency program has been successfully training residents since 2001.

Comprehensive care

SNGH sees the most medically complex and specialized patient population of any hospital in the region - so you learn from a wide variety of cases.

Mixed academic and community hospital

You will get the full academic rounding team experience with numerous disciplines of learners, but also learn how to communicate recommendations directly on attending-only services.

Affordable city living near the beach

Norfolk has all the charm and amenities of a big city, but your salary can also get you a nice apartment and a comfortable lifestyle! We are located within a 20-minute drive of the Chesapeake Bay and the Oceanfront.

Size

Residency class size is small enough that you'll get the projects and elective rotations that you want, yet big enough that you have a built-in support system.

Resident success track record

  • Of all our residents seeking PGY2 training, 100% have successfully matched in the last 5+ years!
  • For those interested in staying on with Sentara after PGY1 year, we have an excellent retention rate for graduates (especially with multiple Sentara hospitals in the region to choose from).

Resident wellness

An extra day is provided during required rotations, and we schedule wellness outings throughout the year including baseball games, riverwalk cleanups, holiday lights and more!

Student loan repayment program

Sentara will pay $400 per month up to a lifetime maximum of $10,000 towards your loan. Residents are eligible immediately upon hire.

Chief resident experience

Your time as Chief Resident includes bedside code blue response, leadership opportunities, and additional growth experiences that don't fit into any one rotation.

Publications

Our preceptors have lots of experience with the publication process and have supported many of our residents through successful publication of their residency projects.
