Sentara welcomes two new members to its Board of Directors

Two accomplished healthcare executives join board serving Sentara’s not-for-profit mission to improve health every day

Sentara Health has elected two accomplished healthcare executives to its board of directors. Sentara is a not-for-profit system of 12 hospitals, ambulatory and health plan divisions, and 34,000 employees.

C. Brian Shipp of Nashville, Tennessee, is founder and president of CBS Advisors, LLC, which advises healthcare-related companies in the areas of investment, growth, mission, and strategy. Shipp most recently served as senior vice president with Elevance/Anthem where, for nearly a decade, he led the Commercial and Medicaid Business divisions, serving more than 20 million customers representing over $28 billion in revenue. Shipp also served 18 years with United Healthcare, leading commercial health plan operations across the southern region of the United States. Shipp’s profile includes a track record of building cultures of service, collaboration, and operational excellence.

Heyward R. Donigan of Virginia Beach, Virginia, brings decades of experience in healthcare services management. She is currently CEO of Health Network One, which curates value-based specialty care networks for payers. HN1’s portfolio includes eye care, sleep health, skin care, and musculoskeletal support. Donigan also served as president and CEO of Rite Aid; president and CEO of Sapphire Digital, which offers provider search and cost calculation options for consumers; and president and CEO of Norfolk, Virginia-based Value Options, a behavioral health firm with 32 million members, 3,100 employees, and a budget of $425 million. Donigan also served in senior leadership roles with several major health insurance providers, including Cigna and Blue Cross/Blue Shield companies in New York, New Jersey, and Washington states.

Shipp and Donigan joined the 18-member Sentara Health Board of Directors on October 1 and began serving three-year terms. The Sentara Board of Directors includes a diverse group of business executives, physicians, and community leaders serving Sentara’s not-for-profit mission to improve health every day.
