Sentara Chief Research Officer John Brush, M.D., has been awarded the 2026 Master of the ACC Award by the American College of Cardiology in honor of his exceptional contributions to cardiovascular medicine.

Dr. Brush was recognized for his achievements along with other 2026 Distinguished Award recipients during the College’s Annual Scientific Session on March 30 in New Orleans.

“I am honored to recognize John Brush, M.D., with the Master of the ACC Award,” said ACC President Christopher M. Kramer, M.D. “Dr. Brush has demonstrated remarkable work that will bolster the ACC’s mission to transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health for all.”

The prestigious Masters of the ACC award recognizes individuals who have displayed excellence in clinical practice, education, and scholarship. Recipients need to be members of the American College of Cardiology for at least 15 years and have provided leadership as part of programs and committees. Only four members are selected for the honor annually. The other 2026 recipients are from Yale School of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, and UVA Health.

In addition to serving as Sentara Chief Research Officer, Dr. Brush is a professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School with research interests in outcomes and medical reasoning. He has authored over 110 peer-reviewed publications, as well as the book “The Science of the Art of Medicine: A Guide to Medical Reasoning.” He recently co-authored a study on the association between neighborhood-level social vulnerability and hypertension complications, as well as a blog post on how Sentara pioneers ways to improve patient care.

“I am very honored and humbled by this special designation from the American College of Cardiology,” said Dr. Brush. “I have benefited greatly from my involvement with the College over the years, and I am thankful to be part of an organization working to transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health for all.”

Dr. Brush has practiced cardiology in Norfolk since 1992. In addition to a busy clinical practice, he has led quality improvement initiatives at the local, state, and national level, including an initiative that engaged over 1,000 hospitals nationwide to improve the timeliness of care for patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology, and he has served on the Board of Trustees of the American College of Cardiology and the Cardiovascular Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is past president of the American College of Cardiology’s Virginia Chapter and the American Heart Association Hampton Roads Affiliate.

The American College of Cardiology supports clinicians and researchers seeking the latest science, research, and education on cardiovascular disease, which is the No. 1 cause of mortality worldwide. It has more than 60,000 members worldwide spanning cardiovascular specialties.

Recipients of Distinguished Awards are nominated by their peers and then selected by the American College of Cardiology Awards Committee.
