Clubs donate clothing to support hospital's Forensic Nurse Examiner Program
Donations support survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center
Eight women’s clubs from across Northern Virginia have joined forces to make a generous donation of new clothing and handmade items to support patients served by the Forensic Nurse Examiner Program at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center (SNVMC). The donation, valued at $3,725, includes underwear, socks, sweatshirts, pants, hats, scarves, blankets, and more.
This SNVMC program provides specialized, compassionate care to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. Many patients arrive at the hospital with only the clothes they were wearing at the time of their trauma, making this donation especially meaningful.
“This is part of our signature project on domestic and sexual violence prevention and awareness,” said Joyce Jolly, state chairperson for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.
“We are proud to serve our community through projects that support women in crisis. Today, eight clubs from the Northern District of Virginia are uniting their efforts to benefit patients here at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center.”
Hospital leaders expressed their gratitude for the generosity of the eight Women’s Clubs: Bel Air Woman’s Club, Dominion Woman’s Club, Herndon Woman’s Club, Junior Woman’s Club of Loudoun, Manassas Woman’s Club, Northern District Past Presidents Club, Springfield Woman’s Club, and Woodbridge Woman’s Club.
“What you do is so heartwarming and so needed,” said Christy Grabus, chief nursing officer at SNVMC and for the Sentara Northwestern Market. “We see firsthand the impact of sexual assault in our Emergency Department. Your gift means so much—it takes a village, and together we can make a difference.”
“These women often arrive with nothing but the clothes on their back. The clothing and items you’ve prayerfully crafted are helping survivors take the first steps toward safety and healing—for themselves and their children,” remarked Rev. Dr. Ruth Anne Sawyer, hospital chaplain at SNVMC and chaplain for the Prince William County Police Department, who underscored the real-life impact of the donations.
SNVMC’s Forensic Nurse Examiner Program provides round-the-clock, trauma-informed care for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and other abuse. The program also partners closely with local law enforcement and advocacy groups to support victims in their recovery and in seeking justice.
“This donation is impactful beyond measure,” said Nicole Dickinson, emergency department director at SNVMC. “We are deeply grateful to these women’s clubs for their generosity and support of our community.”
The donation also drew praise from other community leaders representing the Office of Domestic Violence Services for Prince William County, the Prince William County Police Department, and the nonprofit service organization Action Through Community Service.
