Aquablation therapy milestone achieved at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center
Dr. Inderjit Singh (center) and hospital leadership celebrate his 1,000th Aquablation procedure for the treatment of enlarged prostate
Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center (SNVMC) and Inderjit Singh, M.D., are celebrating a groundbreaking milestone in men’s health. Dr. Inderjit Singh successfully completed his 1,000th Aquablation therapy procedure for the treatment of enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
More than 1,500 Aquablation procedures have been completed at SNVMC since the program’s introduction in 2018, positioning the hospital as a national leader in this advanced robotic therapy. Dr. Singh is the first physician in the nation to treat 1,000 patients at a single facility, SNVMC.
BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that affects up to half of men aged 51 to 60 and can cause frequent urination, weak urine flow, or incontinence. If untreated, it can lead to irreversible bladder or kidney damage. Traditional surgical treatments can result in side effects such as permanent incontinence or erectile dysfunction.
Aquablation therapy offers a safer, more precise alternative. The procedure combines real-time imaging, automated robotics, and a heat-free waterjet for immediate removal of enlarged prostate tissue while sparing the structures needed for urinary continence and sexual performance.
Dr. Singh believes that Aquablation therapy is a game changer for doctors and patients.
“For years, we have been looking for a replacement for surgical resection of the prostate also known as TURP which has been the gold standard,” Singh says. “The results with Aquablation outperform surgery in terms of efficacy and side effects.”
Martin Robinson, one of Dr. Singh’s early patients, credits Aquablation therapy with transforming his quality of life. Robinson had tried other therapies for his enlarged prostate with little to no success.
“I felt like a kid again because when I peed, I could actually feel my bladder emptying,” explained Robinson, who underwent Aquablation therapy just before his 60th birthday. “It worked – and didn’t affect my romantic life. You either get this done or you lose your prostate and everything that goes with it. You got to take care of yourself.”
SNVMC President and SVP of Sentara’s Northwestern Market Jeff Joyner commented, “I’m proud that Sentara continues to advance innovative therapies like Aquablation to improve outcomes for men’s health in the communities we serve.”
Other Sentara hospitals offering Aquablation therapy include Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville and Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg.
Aquablation therapy is the first and only image-guided, automated, heat-free robotic therapy for the treatment of BPH. The system’s real-time ultrasound imaging provides the surgeon with a multi-dimensional view of the prostate enabling personalized treatment planning tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy. The surgeon can specify which areas of the prostate to remove while preserving the anatomy that controls erectile function, ejaculatory function, and continence. Once the treatment plan is mapped, the automated robot removes prostate tissue in a precise, targeted, and controlled fashion using novel, heat-free waterjet technology.
