For patients in the Shenandoah Valley living with hard-to-heal wounds, advanced care is available close to home—and it’s receiving national recognition.

The Sentara RMH Wound Healing Center has been named a Healogics Center of Distinction. The award is given to wound care programs that demonstrate consistently strong clinical outcomes. The designation follows 12 consecutive months of performance benchmarks, including patient satisfaction scores exceeding 92 percent.

Hospital leaders say the recognition reflects the day-to-day work of the physicians, clinicians, and staff who care for patients facing complex wound conditions.

“For patients dealing with chronic wounds, access to high quality care can change lives,” said Jamin Engel, Sentara RMH Medical Center vice president of operations. “Being named a Center of Distinction speaks to the expertise of our clinicians and the consistent, patient centered care they provide right here in the Shenandoah Valley.”

The Wound Healing Center is part of the Healogics network, which supports nearly 600 hospital-based outpatient wound care centers nationwide. Through this partnership, the Sentara RMH program provides evidence-based care for patients with diabetic foot ulcers, pressure injuries, infections, and other chronic or non-healing wounds.

According to the center’s program leadership, the award is as much about culture as it is about clinical outcomes. The focus is on strengthening teamwork, accountability, and trust while continuing to advance patient care.

“To see a team thrive through commitment and growth—through education, skills, and accountability—is the most rewarding part of being recognized as a Center of Distinction,” said Alfred Grace, Wound Healing Center program director. “This team shows up every day for our patients and for each other.”

That commitment shows up not only in patient experience scores, but also in the range of specialized treatments offered at the center. Advanced wound care modalities include negative pressure wound therapy, total contact casting, bio-engineered tissues, biosynthetic dressings, and growth factor therapies. The center also offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which can help accelerate healing in select chronic wounds by increasing oxygen delivery to damaged tissue.

Medical leadership at the center emphasizes that access to this level of care—without leaving the region—can make a meaningful difference for patients.

“Whether you have vascular disease, diabetes, a burn, or a pressure ulcer, the Wound Healing Center is a high-quality place to go that’s close to home,” said Dr. Nina Smith, Sentara RMH Wound Healing Center medical director. “This distinction shows that we’re giving care that is helping the patient heal and keeping the patient happy.”

Established in 2013, the Sentara RMH Wound Healing Center continues to expand its services while remaining focused on personalized, compassionate care. As the program looks ahead to 2026 and beyond, leaders say the mission remains the same: providing advanced therapies, highly trained specialists, and coordinated care for patients with difficult wounds.

For Shenandoah Valley residents, that means nationally recognized wound care is available at Sentara RMH Medical Center.
