Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehab

The Sentara Health & Wellness team offers patients a comprehensive approach to managing heart disease through Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehab, a program that includes education and individualized exercise to support recovery and reduce risk of disease recurrence through healthy lifestyle changes.  This all takes place in a safe environment where highly trained staff monitors heart function and can respond immediately to patients’ needs.

Regular exercise

Improve cardiovascular endurance and increase strength with exercises targeted to enhance overall health.

Heart-healthy nutrition

Learn to prepare affordable and satisfying meals, read nutrition labels, and make balanced choices when dining out—all while successfully managing weight, blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol.

Healthy mindset

Manage stress and anxiety with relaxation strategies, improve communication skills, and set effective goals for wellness.

Pritikin ICR provides a comprehensive approach to optimize health.

Exercise

Individualized and clinically monitored exercise, typically 3 days/week, in which patients learn how to safely progress their activities and reduce risk factors for heart disease through exercise.

Education

Group education classes that address lifestyle changes to reduce disease progression and recurrence of heart problems which accompany each exercise session. In-depth videos, workshops and cooking demonstrations provide the three pillars of the Pritikin ICR program.

Participants also receive 1:1 education, such as nutrition consultations, to round the educational experiences and help meet health goals.

The Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation (ICR) program is a 12-week medically supervised exercise and comprehensive education program for patients with certain heart conditions. Most insurance companies, including Medicare, cover ICR for patients with the following qualifying conditions:

  • Heart attack within one year
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG)
  • Coronary stent or angioplasty
  • Heart valve repair or replacement
  • Heart or heart-lung transplant
  • Current stable angina with symptoms
  • Chronic systolic heart failure

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

At Sentara, our experienced and caring teams of doctors, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, nurses, and exercise physiologists will help you take control of your breathing, reduce your anxiety, maintain your independence and become more active. Pulmonary rehab includes a 12-week program consisting of individualized exercise and education that will assist you in managing your lung condition.

If you have a lung condition, such as COPD, that causes shortness of breath, your doctor may recommend pulmonary rehabilitation as a possible treatment. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a comprehensive program designed to reduce shortness of breath and anxiety while increasing muscle strength and endurance through:

  • Education
  • Supervised and monitored exercise
  • Individual and group instruction
  • Breathing techniques
  • Anxiety reduction strategies

For some people playing golf again may be a reasonable goal while for others walking to the mailbox or shopping at a store is enough to allow them to live independently. Whatever your goal, we will help you get there. Some of the typical benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation may include:

  • Less anxiety
  • Better muscle tone and flexibility
  • Decreased hospital stays
  • Greater independence
  • Increased endurance
  • Increased confidence
  • Improved quality of life

Pulmonary rehabilitation can help improve the quality of life for people with a variety of lung conditions and diseases. Ask your doctor if you would benefit from our program. Some of the most common conditions we see are:

  • Chronic asthma
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • COPD
  • Emphysema
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Lung cancer and post lung cancer surgery
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Reactive airway disease
  • Lung transplant
  • Post-covid lung conditions
