Our licensed speech therapists work with patients to develop individualized therapy programs to address communication and swallowing challenges resulting from cancer, dementia, neurological disease, stroke or injuries.
Sentara offers the following specialized speech and swallowing therapy services at our Sentara Albemarle Medical Center location:
Lee Silverman Voice Therapy® (LSVT)
Our specialists use LSVT to help with Parkinson's disease and other neurological conditions. We use this specialized training to help with voice volume, and recognition of volume through sensory feedback.
VitalStim® therapy
Our speech pathologists use an FDA-approved device that stimulates weak or inactive muscles related to swallowing with electrical impulses. This stimulation helps to strengthen and retrain the muscles used in swallowing.
Occupational therapy can help with healing and recovery after illness or injury, improving the skills needed for activities of daily living and helping to maximize independence.
We offer support with:
- Activities of daily living retraining in our ADL kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room
- Cognitive rehabilitation
- Gross and fine motor coordination activities for the upper extremity
- Range of motion & strengthening for the upper extremity
- Visual perception training
