Sentara Health receives top rank for social responsibility in 2026

Sentara also in the top 10 in the nation for patient outcomes

Sentara Health has been recognized for outstanding social responsibility, receiving an “A” grade on the 2026-27 Lown Institute Hospitals Index. In addition, Sentara ranked in the top 10 in the nation for patient outcomes.

Eleven Sentara hospitals received the top grade for social responsibility, up from ten last year.

In addition, Sentara RMH Medical Center was ranked among the top 10 hospitals in the nation for social responsibility.

The Index is the only national ranking that examines how equitably care is delivered, how well hospitals invest in their communities, and whether patients receive high-value care that avoids unnecessary procedures. The Index also evaluates traditional measures like clinical outcomes and patient safety. More than 50 metrics contribute to a hospital’s overall score.

Four Sentara hospitals make Lown Index Honor Roll for second year

Four Sentara hospitals earned an Honor Roll spot on the 2026 Lown Hospitals Index, up from two last year:

Only 160 out of more than 3,600 U.S. hospitals achieved this status by earning top grades across measures of health equity, value, and outcomes.

“Honor Roll status is earned by hospitals meeting the highest standards across the breadth of our metrics,” said Vikas Saini, M.D., president of the Lown Institute. “They aren’t just clinically excellent, they're deeply committed to the communities they serve and work hard to ensure all patients get the care they need.”

This is the seventh annual ranking by the Lown Institute, a nonpartisan healthcare think tank that describes itself as “advocating bold ideas for a just and caring system for health.” Hospitals do not apply or pay to be listed by the Index, which uses publicly available data.

In addition to the rankings mentioned above, nine Sentara hospitals were recognized as being in the top five in their states for various metrics:
