You can count on Sentara’s board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeons to give you the best possible care throughout your transplant process.

Starting the kidney transplant process

Choosing a kidney transplant is a big step, and you don’t have to face it alone. At Sentara, our dedicated team will walk with you through every stage of the process. The more you know, the more confident and prepared you’ll feel.

Your kidney doctor (nephrologist) is best equipped to understand your health history. Together, you’ll discuss whether a transplant is right for you. If so, your doctor will send your medical information to the Sentara Transplant Center to begin your evaluation.

To make sure you’re ready for surgery, you’ll undergo a series of health screenings. These tests help us understand your overall health and identify any areas that may require attention beforehand. Testing may include:

  • Blood tests
  • Ultrasound studies
  • Cardiac studies
  • X-rays
  • PAP smears and mammograms (for women)
If you are approved for a transplant, you’ll be added to the national waiting list for a donor kidney. You’ll also be matched with a personal transplant coordinator. Your coordinator is your primary point of contact—someone who will answer your questions, schedule testing, guide you through preparations, and keep you updated throughout the process.
