Need to see a healthcare provider in the early morning hours, or even in the middle of the night?

Starting this month, adult patients with a Sentara MyChart account can get in line to see a virtual provider for minor, non-emergency conditions 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The expanded hours will make it easier for patients to quickly access care for minor medical conditions, said Alyssa Myatt, director of virtual care.

“Virtual care is designed to meet you where you are,” Myatt said. “It’s quick, it’s convenient, and it’s extremely useful.”

Sentara’s virtual providers receive specialized training to ensure they can diagnose and treat certain minor medical conditions in a virtual environment, Myatt added.

In 2025, Sentara’s virtual care providers completed nearly 50,000 virtual visits and had a patient satisfaction score of 4.86 out of 5, reflecting the high quality of care.

How do you get in line for 24/7 virtual care?

To get in line for a 24/7 virtual care visit, log in to your Sentara MyChart account on a web browser or smartphone app, then select the Express Care option.

What medical conditions can 24/7 virtual providers treat?

Round-the-clock virtual providers can diagnose and treat a variety of minor medical conditions, including allergies, rashes, pink eye, cough, colds, and sinus infection.

Virtual care providers do not treat the following:
• Emergency concerns such as chest pain or severe abdominal pain
• Patients who are pregnant
• Patients under 18 years old

How long are wait times for 24/7 virtual care visits?

Wait times are typically 20 minutes or less.

What technology is required for a virtual care visit?

If you have a computer or smartphone, it only takes a few clicks to join a virtual care appointment.

“We hear from some people who say, ‘Well, I’m not tech savvy, so a virtual care appointment is not a good option for me,’” Myatt said.

“But if you have a laptop or a smartphone, joining a virtual visit is just a couple clicks. It’s so much easier than getting in your car, driving to your doctor’s appointment, checking in, and waiting in the waiting room.”

Myatt added, “My team also works with all our patients to educate them on how to connect in case they have any concerns.”

What is the best place for a virtual care visit?

Patients should be in a safe and secure location with a strong internet connection, such as their home. They need to be in either Virginia or North Carolina.

Patients cannot be driving a vehicle during an appointment. If a patient is driving during a virtual visit, the provider will end the appointment.

If you don’t have a Sentara MyChart account, can you still see a virtual provider?

If you don’t have a Sentara MyChart account, you can schedule a virtual care appointment from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday by calling 757-252-3050.
