Joel Bundy, M.D.
Chief Quality and Safety Officer
As Chief Quality and Safety Officer, Dr. Joel Bundy is responsible for number of areas at Sentara Healthcare. Dr. Bundy oversees quality, patient and employee safety, employee/occupational health services, accreditation and regulatory standards, medical staff services, infection prevention, business continuity and emergency management services, health equity, credentialing, patient rights, complaints and grievances, advanced care planning, bioethics, and language and interpreter services.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Nephrology, and the American Association for Physician Leadership, and is a Certified Physician Executive through the Certifying Commission in Medical Management. His interest in healthcare policy steered him to participate in programs with the Sorensen Institute and AMPAC. He is passionate about quality and is a Master Six Sigma Black Belt and Lean practitioner through training at Villanova University.
Dr. Bundy's free time involves a love of all things William Shakespeare, Akira Kurosawa and John Coltrane, as well as trying his hand as a gentleman farmer and jazz trumpeter.
Previous Experience
Previously he has served as Vice President of Medical Affairs for both Sentara Leigh and Sentara CarePlex hospitals. He was also a clinical nephrologist in Chesapeake from 1997-2012.
Prior to joining Sentara, Dr. Bundy served as President of the Medical Staff at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and President of the Chesapeake Medical Society. He remains active in the Medical Society of Virginia and is currently a delegate from Virginia to the American Medical Association.
Dr. Bundy was commissioned to the United States Navy in 1984 and subsequently served as a General Medical Officer at Cecil Field NAS in Jacksonville, Florida and then at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth until 1997.
